The . 45 ACP cartridge has a very slight taper, some 0.003” from case head rim to case mouth, so it can be considered a straight case for feeding purposes. The cartridge has changed only in the adoption of non-corrosive primers and different powder formulations in the mid-1950s, and it was known as “Cartridge, Ball, M1911, Cal. 45” for its entire military service life.

In the civilian world however, it has remained as popular as ever. Due to the existence of new generation jacketed hollow point bullets, it still retains its terminal ballistic advantages of expansion and consistent penetration compared to smaller bore diameter offerings. A recent detailed study indeed illustrated that the Federal HST 230gr standard pressure rounds offer 16” of penetration and consistent 0.85” of controlled expansion with no bullet fragmentation in an unofficial “FBI heavy clothing test” into simulated ballistic gelatin.

Different Types of .45 ACP Ammunition

Like other cartridges, the .45 ACP is available in a range of different types and styles. Some of the most common .45 Auto ammo includes:

  • Full metal jacket (FMJ): .45 FMJ ammo features a lead bullet encased with a copper or other hard metal coating, helping the bullet keep its form until impact. People sometimes refer to these cartridges as full metal case (FMC) ammo.
  • Jacketed hollow point (JHP): .45 ACP JHP ammo also has a lead bullet encased in a hard metal, but instead of a round ball, the bullet has a hollow point inside – which makes it expand on impact, increasing its stopping power.
  • Advanced energy transfer (AET): AET ammo, also called frangible ammunition, looks like standard ammo, but when it hits its target, this bullet fragments into tiny pieces of composite materials (as long as the target is harder than the bullet).
  • Total metal jacket (TMJ): Much like the FMJ, the TMJ features a bullet completely covered in a hard metal. The difference between the two is that FMJ ammo exposes a small amount of lead at the base of the bullet, but TMJ completely covers the bullet – minimizing the shooter’s lead exposure.

.45 ACP Ammo For Sale

It’s hard to come up with a more iconic American handgun cartridge than the .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) invented by John Moses Browning in 1904. After successful military trials, it was adopted as the standard chambering for Colt’s M1911 pistol. Best known for the U.S. M1911A1 pistol made famous during WWII, there are still countless handguns in current production that use 45 ACP ammo, including many variations on the original 1911 blueprint. There are also carbine rifles that are chambered for the 45 caliber ACP round, like the overwhelmingly popular AR platform. Putting 45 auto ammo through a rifle has the advantage of longer accuracy and reduces felt recoil down to next-to-nothing compared to a pistol.image

Although not the only 45 round, 45 caliber bullet, or 45 bullets available, .45 ACP ammo is definitely the most popular caliber in this size. If you’re curious about 45 auto vs 45 ACP, it’s actually the same thing. Some folks get confused when they see 45 Colt ammo, which is an entirely different caliber, most often referred to as .45 Long Colt or .45LC, and cannot be used in the same guns.

As a hunting cartridge, the .45 ACP is, well, less than ideal, yet I know those who have used it successfully for deer-sized game at close ranges. In my personal opinion, there are better choices for a hunting handgun cartridge.

The .45 ACP has long been a military darling—though in recent years it was replaced by the 9mm Parabellum as the Army’s issued sidearm—and the debates continue regarding the 9mm/.40 S&W/.45 ACP conundrum. I’ve long been a heavy bullet fan, especially when it comes to handguns, and I believe that all things being equal, if a shooter can effectively handle the .45 ACP, he or she would be well-served by carrying one.

Why is the .45 ACP So Popular?

The .45 ACP grew in popularity outside of the Armed Forces due to its ability to adapt to a variety of shooting applications, including sport shooting, law enforcement, and self defense. Both target shooters and backyard shooters appreciate the .45 ACP for its accuracy, mild recoil, and heavy bullet.

Law enforcement agencies have chosen the .45 ACP for its proven ability to stop dangerous aggressors. Units such as the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team and the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT, as well as other specialized units, carry firearms chambered in the .45 Auto.

The U.S. military officially replaced the .45 ACP with the 9mm in 1985, though it continues to have pockets of dedicated users in the service. Operators of the Marine Expeditionary Units, Delta Force and others within the purview of the United States Special Operations Command have the option of using pistols chambered in the .45 ACP.

As a self-defense weapon, in its basic full metal jacket (FMJ) cartridge, the non-expanding .45 Auto is heavy and penetrates deep. The large bullet diameter creates a significant wound, which can damage the central nervous system, circulatory system, and critical organs. Those looking for personal protection may also opt for specialty configurations from a variety of ammunition manufacturers including Hornady, Federal, and Magtech.

Another reason that contributes to the .45 Auto’s popularity is its affordability.
